Sleeps 2 240 sq ft

Upstairs at the front, with the balcony that everybody photographs and nobody leaves. You will hear the water all night. That is the entire point of the room and also the reason we do not recommend it to light sleepers — in December the surf is loud enough to wake you at three, and no amount of shutter helps. Fan only, no air conditioning. The sea breeze does the work from November, and in May it does not.

Garden Room

Sleeps 2 210 sq ft

Ground floor under the palms, set back from the front and a good deal quieter for it. Cooler than the sea rooms in April, and the room we put people in who are here to work rather than to be on the sand by nine. The trade is that you can hear the sea but you cannot see it. No stairs, which matters to more guests than we expected.

The Long Room

The Long Room

Sleeps 4 380 sq ft

Two double beds along one wall and enough floor left over for the bags, which is why families and groups of four end up here. The window at the far end faces the water over the shack roof, so you get the sunset without the three a.m. surf. It is the compromise room and it is the one we would pick ourselves. We will put a mattress on the floor for a fifth at no charge if you ask beforehand.

Agonda, South Goa

About Agonda, South Goa

Agonda is a single beach in Canacona, at the southern end of Goa, about two hours from Panaji and a world away from the north. It is a two-kilometre strip of sand backed by palms and a single lane of shacks and small guesthouses, with no clubs and very little at night. Olive ridley turtles nest at the south end between November and February, which is why the beach is protected, why the lights along it stay low, and why it has stayed as quiet as it has.

Getting here 3 ways in

Nearest airport
Dabolim (65 km, about an hour and a half) or Mopa in the north (110 km, closer to three hours).
Nearest rail
Canacona, 9 km, on the Konkan line — the overnight trains from Mumbai and Mangaluru both stop there.
By road
Panaji to Agonda is around 70 km on NH66.

The last kilometre is a narrow lane with no lighting; message us and we will meet you at the top of it rather than have you reverse it in the dark.
